Studying abroad from Theni is possible – if it is planned properly
A decade ago, “studying abroad” sounded like something only big-city families did. Today, students from Theni, Bodi, Cumbum and Periyakulam are studying medicine overseas and coming back to practise in India. The opportunity is real. So are the mistakes – choosing a university that India doesn’t recognise for licensing, a course that is too short, or an agent who disappears after the first payment.
As a study abroad consultant in Theni, College Seva’s role is to make sure the decision is correct before any money moves – and then to walk with the student through admission and visa.
Who our study abroad guidance is for
- Students who have qualified NEET-UG but did not get an affordable government MBBS seat in India.
- Families who want a medical degree with a clear path back to practising in India.
- Students in Class 12 who want to plan early – which country, which university, what the full journey looks like.
- Parents who want someone local they can meet face to face and hold accountable.
Countries we guide for MBBS abroad
Not sure if abroad is right at all? Start with our admission guidance in Theni – sometimes the best option is in India. We currently guide students for MBBS in Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and China. Before choosing, compare consultants using the standards we follow. Each country is different in climate, language of daily life, food, distance from home and the way the course is structured. We don’t push one country – we match the country and university to the student.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Course length and internship | India’s NMC rules require at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution. |
| Medium of instruction | The entire course must be taught in English to meet NMC rules. |
| Licence to practise in that country | Graduates must be eligible to be registered as doctors in the country where they studied. |
| Clinical exposure | Hospital access and patient volume decide how confident a doctor you become. |
| Living conditions | Hostel, food (including Indian food options), climate and safety for a student far from home. |
| Total cost over the full course | Tuition, hostel, food, travel, insurance and visa renewals – not just the first-year fee. |
The NMC rules every MBBS abroad student must check
The National Medical Commission‘s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 decide whether a foreign medical degree will let you practise in India. In simple terms, your course must:
- Run for at least 54 months of medical study;
- Include a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution;
- Be taught entirely in English;
- Make you eligible for a licence to practise in that country.
After returning, graduates must clear the licensing screening test (currently the FMGE, conducted by NBEMS, with a move to the National Exit Test planned) and complete a supervised internship in India before full registration.
This is the single most important check. Before admission, we go through the university’s course structure with you against these rules – in writing.
How College Seva handles your study abroad journey
- Eligibility check. NEET-UG qualification, +2 subjects and marks, passport status and budget.
- Country and university shortlist. Two or three options that fit – with the reasons, the full-course cost picture and the NMC compliance check.
- Family meeting. Student and parents together, in our Theni office or on a call. All questions answered before any decision.
- Application and admission letter. We help prepare and submit the application and track the admission letter.
- Visa documents. Checklist, document preparation and guidance through the visa process.
- Before you fly. What to carry, what to expect on arrival, and how to stay in touch with family.
Documents usually needed
Exact requirements depend on the country and university, but most students need:
- Valid passport
- 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates
- NEET-UG scorecard
- Birth certificate and passport-size photographs
- Medical fitness certificate (including tests some countries require)
- Admission or invitation letter from the university, for the visa
Apply for the passport early – it is the step that most often delays everything else.
What life looks like for an MBBS student abroad
Parents often ask us what their child’s days will actually look like. While every university is different, most students go through a similar rhythm:
| Stage | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| First weeks | Arrival, registration, medical checks, hostel allotment, local SIM and bank formalities, basic local-language classes |
| Early years | Pre-clinical subjects – anatomy, physiology, biochemistry – mostly in classrooms and labs |
| Middle years | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and the start of hospital postings |
| Final years | Clinical rotations in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and more – and focused preparation for India’s licensing exam |
| Internship | The 12-month internship at the same institution, as required by NMC rules |
Students who do well abroad usually share three habits: they study steadily from the first year (not just before exams), they pick up enough of the local language to talk to patients, and they stay in regular touch with family. We talk about all of this with students before they fly.
Coming back to India: the path after graduation
- Complete the course and internship abroad as per the university and NMC requirements.
- Clear the licensing screening test – currently the FMGE conducted by NBEMS, with the National Exit Test planned to replace it.
- Complete the supervised internship in India as notified by the NMC.
- Register with the medical council and start practice, or prepare for postgraduate entrance exams.
Planning this end-to-end path at the very beginning is what separates a smooth journey from a stressful one.
