Choosing a study abroad consultant is often the first big decision in a long journey. Choose well, and the next six years feel planned. Choose badly, and families discover problems only after the fees are paid and the student has landed.
You don’t need to be an expert to choose well. (If you’re new to the topic, first read our step-by-step guide to studying abroad from Theni.) You need the right questions. Here are twelve – with what a good answer sounds like.
Questions about the university and course
1. Does this course meet India’s NMC rules? Can you show me in writing?
Good answer: “Yes – here is the course structure. It runs at least 54 months, includes a 12-month internship at the same university, is taught fully in English, and graduates can be licensed in that country.” These are the conditions in the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021.
Warning sign: “It’s approved, don’t worry” – without showing anything.
2. Why this university for my child – and what are the alternatives?
A good consultant explains why a university fits your child’s marks, budget and personality, and shows at least one or two alternatives. If you only ever hear one name, ask why.
3. What is the clinical training like?
Ask about attached hospitals, when clinical postings start and how much patient contact students get. This is what turns a student into a confident doctor.
4. Can I speak to students or parents who went there?
Real experiences – about teaching, hostels, food and safety – are worth more than any brochure.
Questions about money
5. What is the total cost for the entire course?
Ask for a year-wise breakdown: tuition, hostel, food, travel, insurance, visa renewals and personal costs. A first-year figure alone tells you very little.
6. Where exactly do we pay the university fees?
Good answer: “Directly to the university, as per its official process, and you get its official receipt.”
Warning sign: cash payments or transfers to a personal account.
7. What is your fee, and what does it include?
Any consultant fee should be clear and written before you start. At College Seva, guidance is free for students and parents – but whoever you choose, get the terms in writing.
Questions about process and support
8. What documents do we need, and by when?
A good consultant hands you a country-specific checklist and a timeline – and reminds you to start the passport early.
9. Will you help with the visa?
Ask what visa support covers: document preparation, application guidance and what to do if additional documents are requested.
10. Who is my named contact – and where is your office?
You should know the person responsible for your case and be able to visit an office. For Theni families, a local office matters: you can walk in when you have a question.
11. What happens after my child reaches the university?
Arrival, registration, hostel allotment, and who to call if something goes wrong in the first weeks. Ask how the consultant stays in touch after departure.
12. What happens after graduation?
A good consultant explains the full path back to practising in India: the licensing screening test (currently the FMGE conducted by NBEMS, with the National Exit Test planned to replace it) and the supervised internship in India.
Red flags that should end the conversation
- “Guaranteed seat” or “guaranteed licence” promises
- “Pay today or lose the seat” pressure
- Cash-only payments, no receipts, or payments to personal accounts
- Vague or changing answers about NMC compliance
- Reluctance to put fees or terms in writing
A simple scorecard you can use
| Question | Consultant A | Consultant B |
|---|---|---|
| NMC compliance shown in writing? | Yes / No | Yes / No |
| Full-course cost given year-wise? | Yes / No | Yes / No |
| Fees paid directly to university? | Yes / No | Yes / No |
| Own fee clear and written? | Yes / No | Yes / No |
| Named contact and local office? | Yes / No | Yes / No |
| Alternatives offered? | Yes / No | Yes / No |
| Support after departure explained? | Yes / No | Yes / No |
The consultant with the most honest “Yes” answers – not the most impressive office – is usually the best choice.

- Collect every document – receipts, messages, admission letters and agreements.
- Verify the admission letter directly with the university through its official website or contact details.
- Check the course against NMC rules yourself – duration, internship and medium of instruction.
- Ask for clarifications in writing from the consultant.
- Get a second opinion before paying anything more. We are happy to look at your documents and explain what we see – free of charge.
